Junior School Swimming Carnival (Years 3-6)

On Thursday 21 March, our Year 3-6 students participated in the Junior School Swimming Carnival at Rockingham Aquatic Centre. We were blessed with a wonderful sunny day, perfect for swimming. The level of sportsmanship throughout the day was amazing, and we are so proud of our students for giving everything a go!

Secondary Cross Country Carnival

On Wednesday 27 March, the Secondary Cross Country Carnival was held on our brand new oval and surrounds. The College trialled a new format with the event split into Middle School (Year 7-9) and Senior School (Year 10-12) events.

First up was the Middle School Carnival with Year 7 students competing in the 3km event for the first time. The year 8’s set a quick pace in both the boys and girls events with impressive wins from both Jhylan Locker and Sophie Starkey made it back to back wins in year 8. Year 9’s rounded out the proceedings in the middle school event with both Thomas Wrigley and Gracie Dabala taking out line honours.

In the Senior School Carnival, the competition was intense with many close finishes and support from students cheering on the sidelines. Thank you to the HPE department and all other staff who helped make the day a success. We now begin our preparations for the ACC Interschool Cross Country in Term 2.

Lenten Prayers

During this Lent our Religious Education team offered students the opportunity to enhance their Lenten journey through prayer and reflection.

This was offered through a 15-minute time slot at the beginning of the Friday lunch break, where students met with Religious Education teachers and took part in a short but meaningful prayer encounter. Different forms of prayer were used over the Lent period, including personal reflection, worship through song, and Lectio Divina. It was a short time of prayer focusing on a key theme of Lent, with time for students to reflect on their own personal prayers.

About twenty different students attended in total, many on a regular basis. Some asked about when it will be happening again. Here attached are some of the students who attended the last session.

KIC iSCIENCE Graduation – Monday 25 March

Congratulations to Mia Robbie, Year 10, who was one of 34 students who successfully graduated the Term 1 2024 KIC (Kwinana Industries Council) iSCIENCE Project on Monday night. Mia did a wonderful job as one of two iSCIENCE students selected to host the evening and all students did a fantastic presentation to their families, representatives from their schools and KIC member companies on what they had done, and learnt, over the course of the program.

Debbie Hoey, Education Development Officer for KIC said it was an absolute pleasure working with this group of students. We hope that the skills and information they learnt will help shape their future personal and professional journeys.

The KIC iSCIENCE program is endorsed by SCSA (School Curriculum and Standards Authority) and successful completion of the iProject and attendance at the annual KIC iCONFERENCE, held at Murdoch University later in the year, gives students a C grade WACE unit equivalent towards their WACE (Western Australian Certificate of Education).

Here’s what Mia thought about her iSCIENCE experience:

“The iSCIENCE program was a beneficial experience that I thoroughly enjoyed. During this program we took part in workshops, excursions, incursions, industry tours as well as getting the opportunity to meet representatives from different organisations. We did workshops with Murdoch University and attended an excursion on their South Street campus. My favourite part about this program would have to be the aforementioned excursion with Murdoch university. It was great to see what the university offers in terms of courses, and what the lifestyle is like for a university student. For me, this solidified my plans of going on to university after school and gave me some insight into what my future could look like. On top of this, the activities we took part in at the excursion were great fun. I would definitely recommend this program to other year 10 students who are in the process of deciding what they want to do for their career and are interested in science and STEM. Overall, the program was very enjoyable, and I have made many friends along the way, and so I think this program would be advantageous for anyone.”

2023 VETDSS Student of the Year Finalist - Charlie Muggeridge (Year 12)

On Monday 25 March, Mrs Sainty and Ms Liley had the honour of attending the SMTAFE Student Awards Ceremony at Bentley Pines Training Restaurant as we had a finalist in the category of VETDSS Student of the Year: Charlie Muggeridge (Year 12).

Charlie was nominated by her TAFE lecturer (Ben Tan) last year as she completed a Cert II in Hospitality through the VETDSS program at SMTAFE. Charlie was in the top 3 of over 3000 VETDSS students and was in fine company with the other two finalists in this category, having gone through rigorous nomination rounds including an interview by a panel.

On the evening, she was recognised by SMTAFE Managing Director (Darshi Ganeson-Oats), had her citation read by the SMTAFE ATSU and Education Pathways Manager (Soumya Narayanan), and was presented with her finalist certificate by the Minister for Training and Workplace Development; Water; and Industrial Relations, the Hon. Simone McGurk MLA. Unfortunately Charlie was not the overall winner in the category, but to be nominated is a huge success and speaks volumes in how hard our MTCC students work. Well done Charlie!

KIC iWomen Project

We are pleased to announce four of our students have been selected to participate in the Kwinana Industries Council (KIC) iWOMEN Project being held in Term 2. Students include:

  • Kiera Farmer

  • Macey Healing

  • Tess Smith

  • Katie Brearley

The iWOMEN Project is a Senior Secondary Pathway held in Term 2 and Term 3. It is targeted towards VET students (Year 10s) from schools in the region. During the program, students will visit a range of industries and meet women in non-traditional female roles. Kwinana industry is committed to engaging students in the workforce and providing an opportunity for young females to see what industry really looks like. Students will also attend a number of workshops that will give them the valuable skills and tools required as they prepare for their place in the workforce. Congratulations girls!

Sustainability News

Thank you to the all the parents who supported our Sustainability Market Stall this week. The Green Team did an amazing job running the stall and made $165, which will be spent on hay, chicken feed and fish feed.

The Year 5 students have made some wonderful posters to encourage the community to use the “Containers for Change” bins in the College. The Year 4 students have been working in the bush tucker gardens, weeding, mulching, watering and planting a few new plants. They showed great team work while completing these tasks.

The Easter Triduum: Entering into the Paschal Mystery

The Latin word triduum refers to a period of three days and has long been used to describe various three-day observances that prepared for a feast day through liturgy, prayer, and fasting. But it is most often used to describe the three days prior to the great feast of Easter.

Holy Thursday—The Lord's Supper
In the evening liturgy, the priest will wash the feet of a few parishioners.  In this way the many connections between the Eucharist, salvation, self-sacrifice, and service to others are brought together.

Friday of the Passion of the Lord
A day commemorating the Passion, Cross, and death of Jesus Christ, and therefore a day of strict fasting. The liturgy is profoundly austere, perhaps the most simple and stark liturgy of the entire year. The liturgy of the Lord's Passion consists of three parts: the liturgy of the Word, the veneration of the Cross, and the reception of Communion.

Holy Saturday—The Easter Vigil
The Easter Vigil, the Church states, ranks "the mother of all vigils". It takes place at night, starting after nightfall and finishing before daybreak on Easter, thus beginning and ending in darkness. It consists of four general parts: the Service of Light, the Liturgy of the Word, Christian Initiation, and Liturgy of the Eucharist. The Easter Vigil concludes with the Liturgy of the Eucharist and the reception of the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of the Crucified and Risen Lord.
