Message from the Principal

A warm welcome back (both in temperature and sentiment) to the new 2023 school year.

I am excited at the prospects of what we will all achieve together at Mother Teresa Catholic College this year.

Again this year we encounter many “firsts” – almost 40 new staff and again over 200 new students, together making us once more a “new school community”.  We also have new facilities – an Arts building including a café, and a Technologies building.  But more important than buildings, we have our first Year 12 cohort of students, some of whom have attended our College since 2016 when they were our first Year 5 class.

This year, we also celebrate our tenth year since foundation in February 2014.  Together we have so many achievements of which to be proud and so much to be thankful for.  I am grateful for the support and graces I have enjoyed serving as principal of the College since it was a large empty paddock.  Many lives have been touched and enriched here in this wonderful learning community of families and staff of Mother Teresa Catholic College.  2023 will be a good year!

I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the water to create many ripples.

Acting Executive Director Start of Year Message

Dear CEWA community and friends of Catholic Education,

Welcome to the 2023 school year.

Each school year starts with the hope and optimism that comes with new beginnings.

This year, as our world continues to recover from the challenges we shared during the COVID-19 pandemic, there is an even greater sense of excitement for the learning opportunities, events and experiences that students look forward to as they progress through school.

Having visited schools in this first week of term, it is impossible not to be filled with optimism.  While schools have focused on returning to normal, there have been remarkable advances in technology and creative new approaches to teaching that have enriched the learning environments for students in Catholic schools.

It is a source of tremendous pride for Catholic education that these advancements have largely been inspired or led by outstanding and dedicated staff in 163 schools across WA.  And, more importantly, at the centre of these is a commitment to the nearly 79,000 individual students whose stories and successes make Catholic education what it is.  From achievements in the classroom to triumphs on the sports field, and the many hours of service given so selflessly throughout the year, our students continue to demonstrate the value a Catholic education provides to families across the State.

This year we are delighted to mark the opening of Emmaus Catholic Primary School in Dayton. It was a privilege to join Principal Sandro Coniglio and the school community to witness the first day of the newest school in Catholic education.

So, as the 2023 school year gets underway, I offer my heartfelt gratitude to all staff in Catholic schools and offices across our state.  Parents continue to choose Catholic schools because they know that from the moment their child enters a Catholic school until their last days with us, they are guided by teachers and supported by staff who are committed to the mission of Christ-centred and child-focused education.

Catholic schools are exemplified by a spirit of service and a strong sense of community.  At a time when so many in our world face displacement and loss, it is vital that we acknowledge that the start of 2023, as in earlier years, has not been as positive for all in WA, or indeed the world.

For our school communities in the Kimberley region who have either directly or indirectly been affected by the recent flooding, you remain in our prayers and we stand ready to offer the necessary support over the coming months to ensure our Kimberley schools continue to be places of hope, support and learning opportunities.

I wish you all the very best in the year ahead.  And, in the spirit of community that is a hallmark of Catholic education, let us come together in mission to support every student as they discover their potential.

Yours sincerely

Wayne Bull
Acting Executive Director
