Message from the Principal

Good Afternoon Parents and Caregivers

Just a reminder about the Car Park and set down requirements in our College Car Park.

In the mornings:
Parents of all students are encouraged to continue to use the Set Down areas in the College. These areas are in shown in the map attached for reference.
www.motherteresa.wa.edu.au/college-map

No vehicles are to be left unattended in any of the Set Down areas; these are simply for dropping off or picking up students only.
Those who wish to walk their child/children to school are asked to arrive between 8.20am and 8.30am. Junior school parents are asked to then ‘KISS & GO’ outside the Junior School classrooms.
No Junior School students should be arriving at school BEFORE 8.15am. Those families that need to drop off students prior to 8.15am should book their child/children into OSH Club.

In the afternoons:
All College students are to be collected between 3pm to 3.20pm unless students are attending an after-school activity with prior consent.
Families who wish to collect their Junior School child/children, personally must do so via the main entrance to the Junior School. Families arriving before 2.55pm must wait outside the Wellness Centre Building.

Families who wish to collect their Secondary School child/children, personally must do so at the pedestrian entrance to the Secondary buildings near the flagpoles.
Families are asked NOT to park their vehicles in any of the Set Down Only bays. If you are parked in these bays, you will be asked to drive around or park until your child/children are ready to be collected.
Please note any Junior school student not collected by 3.20pm will be taken to College Administration.

We also ask that all Parents and Caregivers observe the traffic flow signs in the Car Park, and do not drive against the flow of traffic at any time.
All traffic leaving the College grounds are required to turn left on to Eighty Road and head in a Northerly direction. Those wishing to travel South are asked to avoid re-joining traffic on Eighty Road heading towards the notorious corner at Sixty-Eight Road and travel an alternative route. While this may add a few minutes to your trip, this will not only be safer but also assist with congestion on Eighty Road.

Please be courteous to your fellow drivers and College staff.  Road rage, abusive and foul language, aggressive driving, and inappropriate behaviour will not be tolerated on College grounds.

We appreciate your ongoing understanding and support with these matters.

Ms Geri O’Keefe
Principal

Project Compassion - First Week of Lent

(Week beginning Monday 27th February)

We begin our annual Lenten Project Compassion journey by learning about Laxmi, a 16-year-old girl living in Jajarkot, a remote district in Nepal where almost half of the population live below the poverty line. Tragedy struck when Laxmi was 10 years old and her father passed away. Her father worked hard to pay for his children's education and, after losing him, Laxmi was at risk of falling further into extreme poverty.

With the support of our partner Caritas Nepal, Laxmi joined a child's club at her school where she was encouraged to resume her education. Through the child’s club, Laxmi developed the skills and confidence to become a leader, advocating for clean water taps at her school.

Laxmi is now excelling in her studies and working towards her dream of becoming a civil engineer. She continues to be involved in the child's club, serving as an advisor and mentoring the next generation of young leaders at her old school.

Watch a short film about Laxmi’s story here.

Please support Project Compassion: www.caritas.org.au/project-compassion.

Ash Wednesday

Each year, Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent and is always 46 days before Easter Sunday. Lent is a 40-day season (not counting Sundays) marked by repentance, fasting, reflection, and ultimately celebration.

Ash Wednesday derives its name from the placing of palm ashes on the foreheads of worshippers. The ashes are a symbol of penance made sacramental by the blessing of the Church, and they help us develop a spirit of humility and sacrifice This year, our Ash Wednesday mass looked a little different. Junior School students joined with our Parish community to partake in the mass and Secondary students received the blessed ashes in their House groups during the Pastoral Care Period.

Ash Wednesday also marked the beginning of the annual Caritas Australia Project Compassion Appeal. Donations to Project Compassion allow Caritas Australia, the Catholic Agency for International Aid and Development, to work with local communities around the world to end poverty, promote justice and uphold dignity.

Each class and Homeroom has a box for donations or you can donate online via the Caritas Australia website at: www.caritas.org.au/project-compassion

Student Achievement

Future Leaders

We love seeing our students getting involved in the local community and making a real difference! Last year, several of our students took part in the City of Rockingham Youth Sport Leadership Program.

Congratulations to Year 8 student Gracie Dabala and Year 10 students Riley Rosenberg, Layla Dabala and Dylan Johnston.
You will be fantastic future leaders!

Liliana Drewniak - Year 10

Year 10 student Liliana Drewniak passed two days of netball trials and got in to the Peel Lightning Bolts. The Bolts program is the underpinning program to Peel Lightning's Western Australian Netball League (WANL) teams.

This is an incredible achievement as it is a highly competitive field and only limited players are selected. Congratulations Liliana!

We love to celebrate student achievement so if you have a success story and photo you'd like to share, please email: marketing@motherteresa.wa.edu.au

Christian Service Learning (CSL)

Crosses for Comfort

Last year, our Christian Service Learning (CSL) program was launched with 'Crosses for Comfort'. Students have been volunteering their own time after school to make wooden crosses and toys out of woodwork offcuts. The finished crosses are donated to the St John of God Hospital palliative care unit and the toys are donated to Wheelchairs for Kids, where they are sent to children all over the world.

By participating in the program, our students are learning new life skills, recycling waste wood and giving comfort to those in need. Crosses for Comfort runs on Thursday afternoons (on even weeks) in C7. All students are invited to participate.
Keep an eye out for more CSL opportunities coming soon!

The Arts News

The Tempest

Tickets are now on sale for the highly anticipated production of The Tempest.
The Tempest is a play in which none of the narratives have much substance. Instead, the focus is on the complexities of being human and the consequences of our actions. On the surface, the play appears like a world of magic, love and loss, but we ask you to look beneath the surface. We ask you to think and make parallels between the character's world and the world of our own.

How are our political leaders different from Prospero?
What are our past and present relationships with the Indigenous People of the land?
Can we change it?

DETAILS: Presented by Mother Teresa Catholic College Year 10 - 12 Students in the Arts Centre Amphitheatre.
Refreshments and snacks will be available at the venue, sold by our Hospitality Students.
This is an alcohol and smoke-free event.

DATES: Wednesday 29 March 2023 - Thursday 30 March 2023
EVENT TIMES: Start 6:30 PM - Finish 7:30 PM
DURATION: Approx. 1hr

ACC Basketball Tournament

On Tuesday 27 February, our Year 7-9 basketball teams travelled to Willetton Basketball Stadium to play in an ACC tournament. Our boys team (coached by Mr van der Kwast) left undefeated, winning 6 games from 6! They will now move through to the finals. Our girls team (coached by Mrs Stennett) won 1 and lost 3, but the games were all very close. We have some incredible basketball talent at the College and we are very proud of our students. Congratulations!

Sustainability News

On Pancake Tuesday, the Kindy students collected freshly laid eggs to use when making their class pancakes with Miss Jo.
The Year 4 students did an amazing job attending to the herb gardens outside the church and planted purple petunias to recognise the start of Lent. We have many wonderful Waste Warriors who have cleaned up rubbish around our school during their lunch time. Thank you so much for caring for our environment Stephanie, William, Ava and Evelyn from Year 2. Our school worms are very hungry so we encourage all students to put their left over crunch scraps in the class worm buckets each day. Once chopped up the worms have a delicious meal. The Pre Primary students have been learning about how to care for the worms.

Our Adventures are created for children, and the best part is that children will choose which Adventure they would like to bring to life every day.

Our Adventures have been developed in conjunction with a panel of experts in childhood development and best-practice playtime, and fall under seven Junior Adventures Group (JAG) developed ‘Domains of Play’ to guide children and their educators in various child-led activities.
