Project Compassion - Third Week of Lent

(Week beginning Monday 13th March)

We are now in the third week of Lent with the Project Compassion story of Priscilla, who lives in the Hwange district in Zimbabwe with her husband, Charles, and two of their grandchildren. Climate change continues to bring unprecedented challenges for people living in the most vulnerable and remote communities in Zimbabwe.

During times of intense drought and food shortages, Priscilla had to commute to the town centre and wait in long queues to collect food.

With the support of Caritas Hwange, Priscilla learnt conservation farming skills to grow drought-resistant crops and started poultry farming to support her family during the current food crisis. Priscilla was able to produce a bumper harvest in her first year of practising in conservation farming. Priscilla also used the funds from her harvest to start poultry farming, which enabled her to sell eggs to pay for her grandchildren’s school fees, books and stationery. The poultry farming provides a safety net for Priscilla and her family during times of hardship, like the current drought.

While the situation in Zimbabwe and across eastern Africa remains dire, the work of Caritas Hwange means that Priscilla can learn the techniques, tools and resources she needs to build resilience and support her family during this current food crisis.

Watch a short film about Priscilla’s story here.

College Colour Run

What a colourful day we had at our annual College Colour Run fundraiser. Our whole College community came together for a fun-filled day of running, laughter, and lots of colour! Everyone looked fantastic in their white t-shirts, which were soon covered in slime, bright pinks, blues, yellows, and greens after running through various colour stations along the route.

The energy was contagious and it was amazing to see our community come together for such a joyful event. We are so proud of all our students who participated and made it such a memorable day! A huge thank you to the Friends of Mother Teresa (FOMT) for organising such an incredible event, as well as to our parent and caregiver volunteers who helped make it all happen.

Donations towards the FOMT Basketball Court Fundraiser can be made until Friday 17 March 2023 via: https://events.humanitix.com/colour-slime-run4fun-entry-fee

Year 7 Retreat

Last week, the Year 7 students participated in their Retreat on Thursday and Friday. The Arts News

The Tempest

Tickets are on sale for the highly anticipated production of The Tempest.
The Tempest is a play in which none of the narratives have much substance. Instead, the focus is on the complexities of being human and the consequences of our actions. On the surface, the play appears like a world of magic, love and loss, but we ask you to look beneath the surface. We ask you to think and make parallels between the character's world and the world of our own.

How are our political leaders different from Prospero?
What are our past and present relationships with the Indigenous People of the land?
Can we change it?

DETAILS: Presented by Mother Teresa Catholic College Year 10 - 12 Students in the Arts Centre Amphitheatre.
Refreshments and snacks will be available at the venue, sold by our Hospitality Students.
This is an alcohol and smoke-free event.

DATES: Wednesday 29 March 2023 - Thursday 30 March 2023
EVENT TIMES: Start 6:30 PM - Finish 7:30 PM
DURATION: Approx. 1hr

VET/Workplace News

Host Employers Required for Workplace Learning

Following on from the success of the inaugural Year 10 Workplace Learning program in 2022, our current Year 10 students will once again be out in the community in Term 2, 19 – 30 June, for five and ten-day blocks (Monday – Friday), thanks to the support of local companies.

If you have, or know of, a business willing to accept students from the College for a one or two week placement, during the dates above, or you have a question about the workplace learning program, please call VET/Workplace Learning Coordinator Andrea Sainty on 9599 7002 or email andrea.sainty@cewa.edu.au .

Workplace learning can be a very valuable program for students in terms of knowledge, skills and practice as well as the WACE Unit Equivalent provided by this endorsed program. Workplace learning can benefit employers too.

We also have Year 11 and 12 students who are completing a VET (Vocational Education and Training) qualification as part of their studies and need to complete relevant industry workplace learning. Thank you for your consideration. It would be wonderful if you can support the College by giving our young adults some helpful, practical experience at work.
