CEWA Executive Director End of Term Three Message

As Term Three comes to a close, there are many milestones in the life of our schools that we celebrate and acknowledge.  And, as the holidays approach, it is a time to reflect on the work and blessings of this school year, to bid our Year 12 students farewell as their school journey comes to an end; and importantly to ensure we take time to refresh ahead of what is always a busy final school term.

Delivering the kind of quality, faith-based education our families have come to expect from Catholic schools is made possible by the dedication of Principals, teachers and support staff working across the state. I once again offer my sincerest gratitude for your work this term to support our children and young people to achieve in all aspects of their learning and development.

One of my highlights of the school year, the Spirit of the Arts Festival, took place across Term 3. This year there were 2,460 entries from 104 schools, with over 18,000 musicians, dancers and performing artists showcasing their talents throughout the festival. We also witnessed the artistic talent on display at the Angelico Art Exhibition.  With 251 primary entries and 188 secondary entries to this year’s exhibition, it was an outstanding showcase of our students’ God-given talents. Congratulations to all participants and award winners including Secondary Angelico Award Recipient, Elizabeth Newton from John XXIII College and Primary Angelico Award Recipient, Emily Quinton from St Michael’s School, Bassendean. Also congratulations to the Zenith Award Recipients: Star of the Sea Primary School, Rockingham, Aquinas College, St Joseph’s Primary School, Bunbury, Mandurah Catholic College, Orana Catholic Primary School, and Trinity College. Finally, to all the category winners in the Performing Arts Festival, congratulations too! I extend my gratitude to the Catholic Arts team and the many school staff, teachers, parents, volunteers and organisers who help these events run smoothly and ensure they are a memorable experience for students taking part.

Earlier this term the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference released the 2023/2024 Social Justice Statement entitled ‘Listen, Learn, Love’. The Statement is a timely call for a new kind of engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and is affirming of the Referendum on the Indigenous Voice to Parliament in October. If you are interested in learning about a Catholic perspective on the Voice, I encourage you to watch the video below, prayerfully reflect on your vote, and participate in discussion about the referendum with wisdom, respect, and discernment.

Catholic Education WA continues to take strong steps not just to engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples but to embrace the culture, language, knowledge and stories of Aboriginal people in our communities of faith and learning, acknowledging the wisdom this brings to our schools and offices. I was privileged this term to launch Catholic Education WA’s new Aboriginal Employment Strategy. In doing so, I reflected on the growing number of staff and students of Aboriginal heritage who see Catholic education as an employer and educator of choice and how important it is for us to continue to put effort into the partnership between the Church and indigenous Australians.

As is tradition, this term school and office leaders from around WA have gathered for our Leaders’ Forum Roadshows held at nine Catholic schools around WA, as well as the University of Notre Dame Broome campus. This year leaders considered a range of topics including a focus on the faith needs of CEWA staff with discussions on the recent faith survey, parish and school engagement, workforce planning and how we maintain accessible and affordable schools. I thank everyone involved in the planning of these significant events as well as those leaders who attended the Forums.

Whilst CEWA’s Strategic Directions continue to provide clarity and shared understanding of our priorities, the Executive has recognised a need to consider the operational structure of the Catholic Education Office through the prism of our mission and purpose. Consequently, this term I made three announcements around structure: firstly, the establishment of a new Business Development Team that will focus on the sustainable growth of our system as well as organisational performance and reporting. Secondly, a restructure of the People, Capability and Wellbeing Directorate into two directorates: School Improvement and Wellbeing, and People and Capability. Finally, in response to the evolving socio-religious landscape, the Religious Education Directorate will be restructured to further serve the faith formation needs of our school communities, as well as ensuring the Religious Education curriculum is responsive to the changing needs and demands of our times.

Following Term 3 school holidays, as many Year 12 students across the State prepare for final exams and assessments, it is important that we acknowledge our graduands for the contributions they have made to the life of their school communities. I wish them well as they approach their conclusion of Year 12 and the next phase in their young lives. I also thank staff, parents and caregivers who have enabled our young people to flourish.

Next term we will be celebrating the Quality Catholic Education (QCE) Awards. This is an annual celebration of the outstanding innovation and initiative of our schools. With 98 nominations this year, projects have ranged from community kitchens to podcasts to a student-run disabilities awareness week. The number and breadth of nominations is a testament to the wonderful work being done in our schools and I congratulate all involved. The winners will be announced in October at the CEWA Staff Breakfast.  Also at this gathering we will celebrate and thank our colleagues who have given 30, 40 and 50 years of service to Catholic education. This is a special time to reflect on the devotion and commitment of staff to supporting the development of generations of children and young people in our schools.

Finally, I was privileged to join Catholic Education WA early career educators and office staff and thousands of young Catholics at World Youth Day (WYD) in Lisbon, Portugal. The gathering affirmed my belief that there are an extraordinary number of faith-filled young people across the world who are committed to nurturing their faith, celebrating being young, being on pilgrimage and committed to mission.  Pope Francis, in welcoming the young to WYD 2023 chose the theme from Luke 1:39 ‘Mary arose and went with haste’ and encouraged young people to “Shine, listen and to be unafraid”.

I wish you a safe and restful break with your family, friends and loved ones.

Orange School Bus Services (SBS)

‘Orange’ school bus services are not available to the general public, they are operated by private operators under a contractual agreement with the Public Transport Authority. School Bus Services (SBS) is responsible for providing eligible rural students and students with special needs, free transport assistance to and from school on contracted ‘Orange’ school buses. These services are critical to enable students to attend school regularly.

When a contract school bus service is not available for an eligible student, SBS may assist the student’s family by providing a conveyance allowance as a contribution towards the costs of transporting their children to and from school. We currently have families in rural areas, like Karnup, who are looking at getting an orange bus to provide transport to and from the College.

If you live in this area and would be benefit from an Orange Bus service, please get in touch with Rebecca Johnson who can provide more information: becanddan@westnet.com.au

Year 12 Final Day

Today we bid farewell to our first graduating cohort of Year 12 students, the Class of 2023! Their last day began with a lovely breakfast in the Café, kindly provided and cooked by the Friends of Mother Teresa (FOMT). We thank them for their kind generosity and involvement on this special day.

Students then made their way to their final College Assembly in the Covered Area, with student representatives and siblings in attendance. Here, we acknowledged our Class of 2023, reflected on their journey at the College and presented some special awards. The biggest surprise of the day was the whole College gathering to form a guard of honour for our Year 12 students, stretching from the Junior School to the Secondary School!

Students finished their day with a beautiful liturgy, time for reflection, and a final game of Kickball! As our Year 12s embark on their next journey, we hope they remember to keep in touch and always find support within our College community. We wish them the best of luck as they prepare for their final exams, complete training or start careers - and look forward to celebrating their official Graduation from the College next Term. Congratulations Class of 2023!

Online Safety with Paul Litherland

This week, we were fortunate enough to welcome Paul Litherland of Surf Online Safe to the College to speak to students from Year 5 to Year 12. Paul also delivered a highly informative parent information session on Wednesday evening.

As a WA Police Force veteran with over 20 years of experience, and working within the Technology Crime Investigation Unit for 6 years, there is no one better suited to prepare our students for the risks of the online world.

Paul provided our students with important information about social media and tips on how they can stay safe online. These workshops were so beneficial for our students, staff and College community. We thank Paul for sharing his invaluable expertise and advice!

Go Lime for Lymphoma

On Wednesday 20 September, our staff went Lime for Lymphoma, raising awareness and money for Lymphoma Australia! This yearly event encourages people to raise awareness and money for Lymphoma Nurses. Currently there’s only three specialist nurses in Australia, and none in Western Australia.

Over $700 was raised for this worthy cause. If you would like to contribute with a donation, visit:

Mary Poppins Excursion

On Tuesday 19 September, our Secondary drama and dance students enjoyed a magical evening at the Crown Theatre, where they witnessed a mesmerising production of Mary Poppins. The excursion provided students with a firsthand look at professional theatre. The Crown Theatre's grandeur and the exceptional performance of Mary Poppins left our students spellbound. The cast's exceptional talent in acting, singing, and dancing, coupled with the iconic songs, made for an unforgettable night.

In addition to the entertainment, our students gained insight into the world of a Broadway theatre production, fostering their passion for The Arts!

Year 9 Indonesian Cultural and Lunch Excursion

On Thursday 7 September 2023, Year 9 Indonesian students went on an Indonesian Excursion. The first stop was the Indonesian Consulate General in Perth, where they learnt to play gamelan, a traditional Indonesian ensemble of percussive instruments, and an Indonesian line dance called Poco-poco. They were warmly welcomed by Pak Irfan and Ibu Rifa, two staff members of the Consulate General.

In his welcoming speech, Pak Irfan commended the students for continuing to study Indonesian after the compulsory years of studying a language. Indonesia is Australia’s closest neighbor and a key partner in trade, security, and regional stability. Understanding Indonesian language and culture fosters better diplomatic relations, business opportunities and people-to-people connections. All students were awarded an Indonesian and Australian flag pin, to acknowledge their role as ambassadors of the Indonesia-Australia relationship, encouraging cultural exchange and mutual respect among their peers, thus contributing to a more globally aware and interconnected school community. Joel Jeeson Kodankandath represented Mother Teresa Catholic College to deliver a thank you speech in Indonesian to the Indonesian Consulate General for welcoming and providing them with opportunities to learn more about Indonesian culture.

Afterwards, students went to Dapur Van Java, an Indonesian restaurant in Victoria Park, for lunch. The delicious aroma of Indonesian food could be smelled as soon as students got off the bus! Ibu Anna, the owner of the restaurant, welcomed the group in Indonesian and they ordered their food and drink in Indonesian. The students had martabak telur, Indonesian style omelette, for appetiser and had a variety of Indonesian dishes such as bebek betutu, mie goreng, bakso Malang, sate ayam and iga bakar. Martabak manis, Indonesian style pancake filled with chocolate and cheese, was served for dessert. Everything tasted delicious! After having their meal, the students had an opportunity to chat with Ibu Anna, to learn more about her life and her business, and to practice their Indonesian. What a great day! Hebat!

“I had fun playing gamelan and dancing. The food in Dapur Van Java was delicious - it was my favourite part.” - Joel

“I loved trying to play the different instruments and enjoyed the dancing, even though I normally don’t. The mie goreng sate that I ordered was very nice.'“ - Riley

“The dancing was fun and the musical instruments that we played were different from those of other cultures. The food was very tasty and had a lot of spices.” - Isaiah L

“We had tonnes of fun at the Indonesian Consulate General! We learnt about some of their traditional dances and music such as gamelan music and poco-poco dance. The restaurant was lovely and the food was delicious. The instructors and the restaurant staff were incredibly helpful, super friendly and accommodating. We can’t wait till next time!” - Milla, Molly and Katerina

KIC iDiversity Project

Year 10 students Luke Tammen, Henley Tolley and Lucas Howes participated in the Kwinana Industries Council iDiversity Project this Term.  The iDiversity project explores the range of careers available in the Kwinana Industrial Area and gives students the opportunity to get an insight into what industry does and what industry expects of employees. The students appreciated the opportunity to attend the programme and enjoyed the varied range of activities.

"The KIC idiversity project was held in Term 3 over six days throughout weeks 7, 8 and 9. This activity allowed a select group of Year 10 students to participate in different workshops, site tours, volunteering and socialising. Some of the workshops included: ‘what is bullying and what to do’, ‘why is volunteering important’, ‘how to structure a good resume’ as well as team building tasks. For volunteering, the group of around 30 students went down to the beach and completed a beach cleanup, where we found there was little rubbish, so people aren’t as bad as we think! We also went into the nature area and pulled up onion weeds. We had presentations by different people from different lines of work, such as a site operator and a social media editor. This allowed us to have an insight into what sort of jobs you can do in the industry. We also went out to a site tour to both Tianqi Lithium in Kwinana and CSBP in Kwinana. At Tianqi we got to see how the lithium was produced and the path it had to take to become lithium Mono hydroxide. I thoroughly enjoyed Tianqi as it was very cool to see the plant from the observation deck. At CSBP we got to have a tour of their site in Kwinana where they make ammonium nitrate among other chemicals. We also socialised with other schools that were there. All in all, I believe the KIC idiversity project was a very valuable experience and I would definitely recommend it to any students that are given the opportunity. The experience was very valuable to see how different industry’s work and what people do in the industry.”

- Luke Tammen

"Overall the project was a great experience where we learned a lot and even ended it with a brand new resume. My favourite part was a Lego team building activity and also Luke and I caught the bus/train there some mornings which helped us learn more about public transport."

- Henley Tolley

Sustainability News

Thank you to everyone who supported our Sustainability Market Stall this week. The Year 4 Green Team students did a wonderful job running the stall and promoting what we learn in our Sustainability lessons. We raised $95 to go towards buying fish food and vegetable seeds.

Another big thank you to our amazing Apple Slinky Staff who give up their time to make apple slinkies every Tuesday and Thursday morning. A special thank you for Mrs Hodgson, Mrs Sneyd, Ms Mann, Mrs Elphinstone, Mrs Faed and Mrs Smith. I know the students appreciate your hard work and talent to make the delicious apple slinkies each week. You are all superstars.

This week the Year 2 students have been busy working in the butterfly garden, watering the plants, adding a bird feeder, rocks and native plants. The Pre-Primary students read, “The Earth Book” and brainstormed ways we can care for our earth. The Year 4 students have been learning about the carbon and nitrogen rich ingredients needed to make compost. Then they added the freshly made compost to the fruit trees in the sustainability garden. Our very happy school chickens have enjoyed being fed corn on the cob and the weeds from our garden beds.

Thank you to all our families who support “Waste Free Wednesday”. It really does make a big difference in the amount of rubbish we see around the school. Remember we are all trying to reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill.
