Supporting Your Anxious Child
At Mother Teresa Catholic College, we understand that supporting a child through anxious moments can feel overwhelming at times. Here are a few gentle, practical strategies to help families navigate these challenges together:
1. Start with Yourself
Children take emotional cues from us. By staying calm and steady — perhaps taking a few slow breaths — you help model the regulation they need to feel safe.
2. Notice the Signs
Anxiety isn’t always obvious. It can show up as tummy aches, irritability, difficulty sleeping, or avoiding school. Spotting the signs early can help you respond with care and understanding.
3. Soothe Before You Talk
When anxiety strikes, focus on calming your child’s body first. Sit quietly together, breathe slowly, or offer a gentle hug. Once they’re settled, acknowledge their feelings:
“I can see you’re feeling really worried right now. That’s okay — we can get through this together.”
4. Don’t Always Rescue
Although it’s natural to want to protect your child, avoiding anxiety triggers can make fears stronger. Instead, provide reassurance and belief in their ability to cope:
“I know this is hard, but I believe you can do it.”
5. Teach Calm Skills
When your child is relaxed, explore calming strategies such as breathing exercises, mindfulness (try Smiling Mind), outdoor play, and restful downtime. These skills can be powerful tools for building resilience.
